Professor P.P.Patil, born in a poor farmer’s family in a small village Anjale, Tal. Yawal, Dist. Jalgaon. He started his early education in a tiny village school named NutanVidyamandir, Anjale. A brilliant student throughout, he enrolled in Aabasaheb Garware College, Pune for his B.Sc. (Physics) degree (1981) and secured first class with distinction. After successful completion of Graduation, he completed M.Sc. (Physics) degree (1983) from Department of Physics, Savitribai Phule Pune University.  He secured first class with distinction and was awarded the prestigious “S. S. Joshi” and “Malti Nandgaokar” prizes for his achievements. He obtained his Ph.D. (Physics) degree (1988) from Department of Physics, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. While his bio-data itself speaks of its volume, he excelled in academics throughout his education.

Prof. Patil started his teaching career as a Lecturer in Department of Physics, M. J. College, Jalgaon in 1988. In 1991, he joined Kavayitri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University (Formerly known as North Maharashtra University) since its inception till date and as such was involved in every inch of its growth and development. It is noteworthy that apart from numerous opportunities to his outstanding research career in the outside world, his strong determination urged him to serve the soil of his Janmabhoomi (birthplace) where he decided to stay for his future career. He worked as a Director of the School of Physical Sciences,one of the largest and most active Schools on the University campus from 1994 to 2014 (20 years). As a founder teacher of the School of Physical Sciences, he assumed the responsibility of shaping the School and worked tirelessly to bring the School to the national repute.

In recognition of his academic excellence, administrative abilities, leadership qualities and his active participation in the development of higher education, he became the Professor of Physics in the School of Physical Sciences, NMU at a very young age.He has 28 years of teaching experience and has been a Professor of Physics for 17 years from 1999. He is an honest and able administrator and educationist who always strives for excellence.

As a founder teacher of the School, he established the Department of Electronics in 1991-92 and started two years post-graduate M.Sc. (Electronics) programme. In the subsequent academic year 1992-93, he established the Department of Physics and started two years post-graduate programmes - M.Sc. (Physics with Materials Science specialization) and M.Sc. (Physics with Energy Studies specialization). Under the Scheme of Innovative Programmes of UGC, the M.Tech. (VLSI Technology) degree program was introduced in the Department of Electronics Engineering and Technology in 2005.

In this university, many of the students are first generation learners especially from tribal and minority communities in Dhule and Nandurbar districts.  The main aim of this university is to bring the tribal and rural students in the main stream of higher education. With a view to expand horizons of knowledge, he always ignites and motivates the students. He is a sincere teacher with a genuine interest in students’ welfare who teaches the students with missionary zeal by developing the work ethics of his own.Some of the student-centric activities started by Prof. Patil include-organization of Conferences, Seminars, C.V. Raman Memorial Seminars and financial aid for deserving and needy students.

With the efforts of Prof. Patil, three research students of the School were deputed for Summer School programme at Graduate School of Advanced Technology and Science, Tokushima University, Japan as a part of student exchange programme. Prof. Patil’s Ph.D. students were invited for Postdoctoral Research in the international research laboratories such as Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Chungnam National University, South Korea, Department of Advanced Materials Chemistry, Korea University, South Korea, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Prof. Patil has worked on various academic/administrative bodies of the North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon and other Universities. He was the member of Senate, Academic Council, Board of Colleges and University Development (BCUD), Board of Examinations, Faculty of Science, Board of Studies, Academic Audit Committee, Library Committee, Purchase Committee, Research and Recognition Committee (RRC), Board of University Teacher’s and Research Committee, various Enquiry Committees etc. from the inception of the University till today. He has contributed in the various important decision making processes as a member of the above mentioned committees. He was also a member of Board of Studies, Research and Recognition Committee and Academic Audit Committee, Teachers Selection Committee of several Universities in Maharashtra State.

In 1991, being a newly established university, there were no infrastructural facilities available to conduct research activities. In such circumstances, as a founder teacher of the School of Physical Sciences, he assumed the responsibility of bringing the School to the national repute and worked with strong determination to build up and update all the infrastructural facilities necessary for the research activities.   After shifting to the new building of School of Physical Sciences in 1998, he worked tirelessly and made enormous contributions to research in the areas of “Conducting Polymers, Nanostructured Metal Oxides, Nanocomposites, Corrosion Protection, Diamond Coatings, Gas / Humidity sensors and Atmospheric Plasma CVD”.His spirit of devotion and high marks are reflected in the laboratories of the School which paves the way to the students to pursue their research work. He emphasized indigenous know-how to make the laboratories with updated infrastructure and state of the art facilities.

With dynamicity and expertise in aforementioned research areas, he has bagged appreciable number of projects worth Rs. 234.35 Lakhs from Government organizations like UGC, CSIR, DRDO, BRNS (DAE), DST, TWAS (Italy).  During his Directorship, the School has been recognized under Special Assistance Programme (SAP) for Departmental Research Support Level-I for the period 2004-2009 and Level-II for the period 2010-2015 from UGC, New Delhi. The School was also recognized under FIST Programme of Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi for the period 2006-2010.

Prof. Patil has more than 28 years of research experience and has to his credit more than 90 national and international publications with the higher impact factors.  The citation analysis of Prof. Patil’s publications indicate that his work is widely quoted in national and international journals. So far eleven students have completed their Ph.D under his guidance, three Ph.D. submissions have been made and four students are currently pursuing Ph.D. under his guidance.

He is an erudite scholar who keeps himself engaged in studying widely on the research area of his interest. Because of his scholarship and fluency over the subject, he was invited byKorea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), South Korea under Brain Pool Programme as a visiting faculty during 2006-2007.

In his long illustrious career of 28 years, he was honored with many awards and accolades like prestigious “Smt.Annapurna Award” (2006) of the Society for Advancement of Electrochemical Science and Technology (SAEST), CECRI, Karaikudi, Tamilnadu, India,“Best Teacher Award” (2004) by North Maharashtra University and Best Teacher Award”(2008-09) by Government of Maharashtra.

            Prof. Patil is a Fellow of Maharashtra Academy of Sciences, India, Life Member of Indian Association of Solid State Chemists and Allied Scientists (ISCAS), Jammu, India and Life Member of International Disordered Associates Society (INDIAS), Allahabad, India

Prof. Patil has thorough knowledge of University System with 28 years teaching, administrative and research experience.He is very punctual, organized and highly disciplined and able academician and administrator.  He had hold key positions on the Statutory Authorities, Bodies and Committees of this universitysuch as Co-ordinator of NAAC Steering Committee for 3rd cycleresulting in “A” grade (CGPA 3.11), Member of NAAC Steering   Committee for 2nd Cycle resulting in “B” grade (CGPA 2.88), Secretary of NAAC Steering Committee for 1st cycle resulting in “Four Star” status for North Maharashtra University. He performed a key role in submitting the detailed report of NMU to NIRF (National Institute Ranking Framework), Government of India (2015). The University was ranked at 59th positionamong the renowned national institutes/Universities in India by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for the academic year 2015-2016. He also worked as Director, BCUD in North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon.  His research insights, innovation and intellectual acumen are reflected in every responsibility assigned to him by the university especially on the committees of highly confidential matters. Prof. Patil has proven his capabilities through hard work, discipline and dedication while shouldering academic as well as administrative responsibilities at university level.

To sum up - his diligence, inquisitive nature and unwavering commitment enabled him to become a reputed and popular teacher and also an able administrator having thorough knowledge of University System with 28 years teaching, administrative and research experience.  Prof. Patil always shares a vision of inclusive, equitable and quality higher education system in tune with the sustainable economic and social development of our nation.
